Bhanu Joshi

Hailing from a musical family in Mumbai and having started learning Samvadini from the age of eight under his father late shri Pragjibhai Joshi – an accomplished Samvadini and Dilruba player and a music teacher, Bhanu Joshi is among the few Samvadini players who remains totally focused on the solo rendition of Samvadini in a manner similar to the Indian instruments like the Sitar, the Sarod, the Flute and the Santoor.

Subsequently Bhanu Joshi was fortunate enough to come in contact with Samvadini Maestro late Pandit Manohar Chimote and become his disciple in the traditional guru- shishya relationship. The musical training under Pandit Manohar Chimote was very extensive and laid in him the foundation of solo rendering of Samvadini.

Bhanu Joshi’s Samvadini vadan is characterized by both the vocal genre ( Gayaki Ang) and the instrumental genre ( Tantrakari Ang). It embraces the entire format of instrumental music rendition in aalap, jod, jhala. gatkari in slow, medium and fast tempo and semi classical repertoire like dadra, thumris, and folk dhuns. Further a subtle gandhar based tuning of Samvadini in accordance with the shruti shatra of Indian classical music imparts a distinct tonal quality, clarity of notes and a proper blend of harmony and melody in any given number rendered on the Samvadini.

Another characteristic of Bhanu Joshi’s Samvadini Vadan is the appropriate use of the kriyas like gamak, khatkas, ghasit, girav, kan , avkan, krutan, jamjama and murkis while rendering a given piece of melody thereby enhancing the capability of Samvadini as a solo instrument on par with other Indain instruments.

(Bhanu Joshi) has given his solo Samvadini performances all over India and has played for various musical conferences and organizations like Samvadini Foundation, Spic Macay, Saptak and many others. He has also participated in Samvadini Sammelans in Pune, Baroda and Mumbai.

(Bhanu Joshi) currently imparts teachings in Samvadini Vadan and at present students are learning from him. The teaching is not on commercial basis but limited to only serious students desirous of pursuing Samvadini learning on long term basis.

To conclude Bhanu Joshi’s life motto is to view Music as a mission and to do Sangeet Sadhana as a never ending journey . With this motto in mind, he continues to render his services in the field of music by way of learning, performing, teaching, organizing music programs and writing papers on the subject related to music in general and Samvadini in particular. In short, he is pursuing the path of solo Samvadini vadan as laid down by his Guru Late Pandit Manohar Chimote.

Bhanu Joshi hails from Mumbai, holds a Masters Degree in Political Science from University of Mumbai, and has worked in senior most positions in the corporate sector and now works as a marketing consultant to steel based companies.
